Win a Sweet Potato Cheesecake that’s fit for a President

by Ashtyn Evans

If you are a fan of Road Tasted with Jamie and Bobby Deen and you caught the episode where they toured Atlanta then you might be familiar with what I am about to offer to one lucky winner. One of the establishments featured was a bakery, the Sweet Auburn Bread Company.

Chef SonyaChef Sonya, the owner of the business, makes a fabulous sweet potato cheesecake that is more like two desserts in one. Rather than putting crust down for this fabulous dessert, Chef Sonya kicks it up a notch and puts some of her homemade pound cake as the base for the cheesecake. The result appears to be something moist, creamy, and absolutely scrumptious. It’s said that it’s fit for a president because Bill Clinton tried it out and before he left, he had one boxed to take with him!

I am lucky enough to be reviewing one of these cheesecakes, so I will let you know how it is in a review as soon as one arrives. Until then, you have a chance to win one for yourself! Winning is simple and its well worth it, as it is a $50 value. If you want to win a sweet potato cheesecake all you need to do is comment here on this post about your favorite local bakery.

There are so many great places around the country that Chef Sonya and I thought it would be nice to shine some attention on those smaller places and give them the praise they deserve. So, let us know your favorite local bakery and tell us why you like them as much as you do. At the end of the contest period (August 8), I will pick a winner from those that have submitted a comment and Chef Sonya will mail you out a cheesecake once I have your contact info.

The rules are pretty straight forward. Please only enter once. You can discuss other things and bakeries on the comments here, but only one entry is allowed. Please let us know what you like about your favorite small bakery. Do not list any franchise bakeries (i.e. no Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme). Other than that you only need to be in the United States to qualify.

Good Luck and until then you can check out Chef Sonya’s website and goodies at: The Sweet Auburn Bread Company.

My favorite local bakery isn’t really a traditional bakery at all. Once a week, growing up, my family and I would head over to the Grazt Farmer’s Auction. Amount all of the fresh produce found there was a stand completely run by Amish people. They sell buttery rolls, cupcakes topped with chocolate icing and jimmies, layer cakes filled with cream, and–best of all–fresh hot pretzels. They make the pretzels from scratch right in front of you and the smell of baking pretzels is enough to make you HAVE to stop and buy one. That was our big treat for the week–warm, homemade Amish pretzels. Today, I don’t live nearby, but whenever I’m in town, I stop for a pretzel from my favorite “bakery.”

My absolute favorite bakery is Wholly Cannoli in beautiful Worcester, Mass. To tell you why Wholly Cannoli is so amazing is hard because it makes my mouth water so much. There bakery has everything from pastries to pies and cakes, but obviously, it is there over 30-flavor cannoli menu that makes me go back and back and back. My favorites are banana split, pina colada, and peanut butter and jelly, but I am not picky. While the taste and innovation cannot be beat, I love this bakery because it also represents what Worcester, Mass. is all about - great food in hidden jewels. But, don’t just take my word for it - they ship their goods, too! (http://www.whollycannoli.com/)

    Wholly Cannoli! That’s good bakin’!

I really have to give a shout-out to Sinful Cheesecake Company in Michigan. They did my wedding cake and it was phenomenal. The cake was the number one compliment I got at my wedding! I guess it is not a traditional bakery, in that they mostly just do cheesecake, but it is so good, that I thought you all should know about it!!

Unfortunately there are not many bakeries around my area, but my favorite would be the one run by one of my friends. Although she doesn’t yet have her own store, she sells great rainbow cookies, brownies, cheesecake, custom wedding cakes and many other treats to local supermarkets and gatherings.

Oh yummy, this sounds sooo good. I’m always ordering sweet potato pancakes, I’ve never tried this but it sounds delicious. I can’t give a shout out to any company as I rarely buy cheesecakes since we don’t have a factory near us. I’ve only had a “true” cheesecake once and that was down in Ohio, it’s been many years though since. So since I must say one I’d say the cheesecake factory in Ohio.

My absolute favorite bakery is probably going to sound lame, but there you have it =) It doesn’t have a fancy name…it’s just called Donuts, which is admittedly sad. Their donuts aren’t even the best I’ve ever had. However, it just rings of family to me. It has been run by the same family for as long as I can remember. We started foing there when I was seven or eight (I’m now 25). Everytime I’m at home in Tracy, CA I have to stop and buy donuts there. The family always remembers us and they are just so friendly. They don’t speak very good English, but they are always so funny and genuine. Anyway, I’ll always be loyal to them as long as they’re open simply because they always made us feel welcome. And if that makes me a tad bit pathetic, so be it…hehehe ;)

My favorite local bakery is a little place called Decadent Designs. When I first saw their website, it was all I could do not to drool. Love at first sight, I promise you. Their cakes are beautiful, clean simple designs and yummy insides. They even make cakes for events like corporate outings, complete with your company’s logo.

I’ve never seen a cake I wouldn’t cut up to eat (other than on the pastry competitions on television) until seeing the cakes from this bakery.
