Shows the Food Network Could do Without

by Ashtyn Evans

Robin MillerIf you watch Food Network as much as I do it would only be natural for you to find some shows that you aren’t interested in watching. During the day, there are a variety of cooking shows on the network. On the weekend there are even more shows that you can sink your teeth into. Of course, not all of them seem worthy enough to help the home cook succeed in that jungle of a kitchen.

So, who could the network do without?

Sandra Lee and Semi-Homemade

If I haven’t said it before, I will now. Taking a packet of seasoning and rubbing it on meat or mixing it with something to make a dip, does not make it semi-homemade. Yes, it’s made at home. However, most food that is cooked at home could be called that. The show claims to use 70% store bought and 30% fresh ingredients, but they must be counting things like meat because it’s rare to see Sandra pull out anything that she actually has to prepare on her own, other than her cocktails.

I may be able to overlook this if I was the only who felt this way, but looking at her list of ratings of 1s, 2s, and the rare 3 tells me I am not alone here. It’s time for Sandra to go.

Quick Fix Meals with Robin Miller

I love this concept, but I am not sure how hip on Miller I am. She has the home cook thing down, so there isn’t really any problem there. However, there is something I am not in love with. I have received more than one email on her cooking style. Viewers aren’t fond of how she pours oil in sizzling pans or uses other hazardous techniques. In fact, this is a common complaint I have heard from other viewers. I find the occasional meal that looks good on Miller’s show, but the majority seems similar to previous meals she has cooked and everything is overly simplified. Nothing is wrong with quick food, but static meals just aren’t any fun.

Simply Delicioso

I think I have heard the term Simply Delicioso so much that I practically convulse when I hear it. I cannot find one thing that I like about this show. The host, Ingrid Hoffmann, proclaims that she is a professional eater. This, to her, means that she doesn’t want to slave in the kitchen. She wants her food fast, but….Simply Delicioso. The music interludes are a bit much, as is the way she freezes her guests so that she can show us how she made her “yummy” food. I cringe when this show comes on. I have managed to sit through a few episodes, but the entire experience leaves much to be desired when it comes to Latin cooking and the chefs that make this style of cuisine.

Those are definitely my top three cooking shows that hopefully are on the way out. Are there any shows that you hate to watch and purposely avoid? If so, let me know, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I for sure agree with semi-homemade and Simply Delicioso. I have often said that Sandra Lee should have a show that only revolves around cocktails. Simply Delic. should not be on Food Net. at all though. Almost all of her recipes have 1 to 3 stars on the Food Net site. I don’t think that the show is doing well at all. Most people are saying that they only but Ingrid on because of her sex appeal. I watched the show to try to give her the benefit of the doubt, but I couldn’t take it- it was too annoying. I don’t think that the show is doing well since they advertise it every single commercial break. I never want to hear that little latin jingle again. JAG would have been a far better choice for a latino show. I never heard him say “yummy” hehe.

I’ve been doing what Robin Miller does for over 6 years but with more imagination. Simply Delicioso is annoying! If I’m going to watch a cooking show I need to be able to understand what they say. My issue is with the Barefoot Contessa and Maltos Mario. Neither one cook things that the average person makes on a daily basis. And the word Barefoot needs to be taken out of her title. When I’m cooking in my kitchen, I don’t want to watch a show with barefoot in the title, that’s just gross!! I know I could do better than a some of these “cooks.” I’m not saying they can’t cook, I’m saying they need to relate to the viewers. I have a great idea for a show, maybe someday I’ll be able to share it.

Mario is pretty much out of FN, except for his Iron Chef America shows.

Geez, get rid of everything that has to do with Rachael Ray first please! What a freaking waste of time and energy her shows are! None of the stuff she makes is healthy, and it all looks nasty. For someone like her to put a recipe on the FN website for cooking bacon in a microwave, or carving a pineapple boat is just pathetic. There is a difference between a recipe and a procedure. Ingrid Hoffman is just a Rachael clone for Hispanics, anyone can see that.

If the Semi-Ho would get rid of the alcohol in every single show, and those stupid tablescapes, I wouldn’t mind it staying on.
