Barbecue Review: Nobody does it quite like Dreamland
Rounding out my Road Tasted Atlanta reviews is Dreamland Barbecue. Jamie and Bobby went to the restaurant in Atlanta and not only got to taste the ribs, but they got to help cook them, as well. I have to admit with that gigantic mop going into the wood burning pit, it looked kind of fun. Unfortunately, my kitchen doesn’t have one of those, but I managed without it because of all the hard work that was done for me.
I received a large box from Dreamland that included everything I could have wanted and more. When I spoke to the representative for the company, I was not sure what she was sending. Many of the restaurants will send whatever aired on Food Network. In that case, I was expecting a slab of ribs, some of their famous barbecue sauce, white bread, and some wet naps.
Well, I did receive all of that, but I also received a pound of pulled pork, a package of smoked sausage, some house dressing (good on meat, fries, and salads), a Southern pecan pie, and a barbecue pack that included an adorable oven mitt (it looks like a little piggy), a t-shirt, and some tongs. Needless to say, I was quite impressed and flattered before the food came anywhere near my mouth.
The packaging was excellent. Everything was stored into a standard box that was refrigerated with dry ice. The food packages were all vacuum sealed so it was your typical frozen food fare. All items that require heating up had directions on the bag or in the box. So, there is no worry about messing it up. For instance, on the rib package there is an option of cooking methods and the times that would be necessary for each method. It’s pretty simple. All you need to do is warm the food up, add more sauce and dinner is ready!
There was no way that I could make all this food in one meal. Well, I could have, but that would not have been very waist-line friendly. The pulled pork thawed first so that was the winner for our lunch. I grilled up some buns, heated the pork up, added the sauce to it, and it was lunch time.
The pork was phenomenal. I swear I have never tasted anything so tender. It actually melted in my mouth. The sauce gave it a slightly spicy depth and burst of flavor, which only added to the sandwich. Dominick, who had never had real pulled pork (neither had I, really) is now a pulled pork junky. He absolutely loved it and told me I needed to find out how much it was so that we could get more soon. My mom ate up her sandwich pretty quickly and Robert had a few bites, but opted out of the sandwich. He did comment on how much he liked the barbecue sauce, but as he is not a big meat eater, I didn’t expect much out of him for this review. With a beginning like this, I had a feeling only more good things were headed our way.
Next up was the ribs. When I opened the package I could immediately smell that glorious grill smell. In fact, the ribs had some sauce on them and when I went to wash them off I could see that charred black stain on my hand that meat gets when it’s been on the grill. I couldn’t wait to try these ribs! Like the pulled pork they were excellent. They were firm on the bone, meaty, and not too tough like you might imagine certain types of ribs to be. I was worried about how they would handle having been shipped, but the grill taste remained prominent and they tasted like we had grilled them outside before bringing them in for supper. The ribs were amazingly easy to cook. All you have to do is reheat them and add sauce to taste. The result was a quick, easy, and delicious supper.
With the ribs came the pecan pie. I can honestly say that this was heaven. The pecans were plump and perfectly shaped. You could feel them crunch in your mouth as they sunk into the pie filling. The pie filling was marvelous, as well. It was incredibly rich, but it was not something that was in that “too sweet” category of desserts. It was definitely one of the desserts I wouldn’t have minded going back for seconds on. While we all behaved and had just one piece, we did delight in the fact that we could have some more the next night.
Finally we ate the sausage. All I can say is that they don’t make smoked sausage like that in Michigan. The result, which we grilled, came out plump, juicy, and delicious. I was sad that there wasn’t more. We tried it in various ways and each time it was delicious. Some of the things we did with it included hot dog style (on a bun with ketchup and mustard), cooked in the barbecue sauce, and cooked with sauerkraut. It would have been hard to pick my favorite one. In truth, I liked them all. The sausage was my mom’s favorite. Even Dominick who isn’t a big smoked sausage lover liked these, although nothing can compare to his love of the pulled pork.
So, if you have some money to spare and have a craving for some Southern Barbecue unlike anything you have ever tasted, you should give Dreamland a try. Visit their website to order their pulled pork, sausages, and of course their luscious spareribs. My entire ordering experience was a breeze and everything we tasted was amazing. Chances are, they will be seeing an order from me soon. After all, Dominick is already asking for more of those pulled pork sandwiches I made.
