Bobby Deen’s Caramel Cake

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

Bobby Deen's Caramel CakeWhen it comes to cooking, Bobby Deen, son of Food TV’s most popular Southern Chef Paula Deen, is a man after my own heart. His recipes look and sound delicious. I am not the only one who agrees. Bobby has two of the top recipes on the Food Network Website currently. This is one of those recipes.

I first saw Bobby whip this dessert up on an episode of Paula’s Home Cooking, which was a birthday style episode. I haven’t had a chance to make it yet, but I just had to share it so you all could try it. It has four stars on the Food TV rating system. So, if you happen to try this recipe before I get the chance to do so, leave a comment and let me know how good it actually is!

Don’t Fault Rory! – Reality was the Only Way In

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

Rory Schepisi Cleaning UpLe Food News recently posted an article on the Next Food Network Star and apparently Rory Schepisi. While I didn’t have a chance to read the article I did find her response to it on their site. If you’d like to read it you can find it at: Food Network Contest Tells Her Side of the Story.

Rory has defended herself on numerous blogs. On Literary Illusions, she appeared in a comment of an article I wrote before the series had ended. She continually claims to tell people they don’t understand reality television and insists that the television editors gave her a bad rap. However, what I think she fails to understand is that the producers and editors cannot edit a bad attitude that never happened. If there were no mistakes or poor representations of her to be shown they wouldn’t be able to show them in the first place. Perhaps they just chose to show us the side of her that was the most appealing. Unfortunately it was not the most likable.

It also shows a lack of appreciation for Food TV, in my opinion. I mean, they were nice enough to put her on television in the first place and now she’s going to go and complain that they made her look bad? These complaints are undoubtedly because she didn’t win.

The Good Things about the Contessa

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

Ina GartenBarefoot Contessa is a show on Food Network featuring Ina Garten. Admittedly, Ina is not one of the forces on the Network that stand out for having multiple shows or a powerful exuberant nature. However, she is becoming one of my favorites on the Network.

One of the main reasons I like her should be the food she cooks and I do like her food, but I don’t think that’s the main reason. I like that her show is different. She features her friends on the show. She cooks for them and she invites you into her life. That just seems so rare in television of any form.

Ina offers a warm and inviting smile as she welcomes you into her home. She laughs with you as she tells stories about when she would send her husband brownies when he was in college or that it’s Friday night but she isn’t serving chicken.

Barbecue Review: Nobody does it quite like Dreamland

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

Rounding out my Road Tasted Atlanta reviews is Dreamland Barbecue. Jamie and Bobby went to the restaurant in Atlanta and not only got to taste the ribs, but they got to help cook them, as well. I have to admit with that gigantic mop going into the wood burning pit, it looked kind of fun. Unfortunately, my kitchen doesn’t have one of those, but I managed without it because of all the hard work that was done for me.

I received a large box from Dreamland that included everything I could have wanted and more. When I spoke to the representative for the company, I was not sure what she was sending. Many of the restaurants will send whatever aired on Food Network. In that case, I was expecting a slab of ribs, some of their famous barbecue sauce, white bread, and some wet naps.

Well, I did receive all of that, but I also received a pound of pulled pork, a package of smoked sausage, some house dressing (good on meat, fries, and salads), a Southern pecan pie, and a barbecue pack that included an adorable oven mitt (it looks like a little piggy), a t-shirt, and some tongs. Needless to say, I was quite impressed and flattered before the food came anywhere near my mouth. (more…)
